Exploring the cultural power and contested political histories of archeological ruins, Emii Alrai’s Guardian takes the form of a colossal fragmented relic inspired by the mythological icons of ancient civilisations. The formidable and abstracted sculpture, upheld by a museological armature of raw metal and finished in a vivid patina of teal and brown, draws on Alrai’s background as a museum registrar and her interest in the lives of objects. Both as vessels for nostalgia and romanticised visions of the past, as well as the vexed questions of empire, authenticity, memory and cultural preservation that surround archeological remains. Drawing on her British-Iraqi heritage, the form and scale of Guardian makes particular reference to the Lamassu, an Assyrian protective deity and series of monumental statues found at the gates of ancient Babylon. Immense creatures with the body of a bull, wings of an eagle and the head of a human, the statues were first excavated in the 19th century by British archaeologist Sir Austen Henry Layard and later severed into pieces for transport to London. Several notable Lamassu remain on permanent display at the British Museum and are subject to ongoing debates over preservation, ownership, rights and repatriation.&nbsp; Guardian – itself ruptured into a series of worn and ghostly fragments – speaks not only to this particular story of empire and cultural extraction, but to an inescapable, personal search for identity and place. Removed from its specificity, Alrai’s eroded icon is emblematic of our fascination – and at times familiarity – with an abstracted past that is only partially our own. Giving rise to conflicting feelings of fear, pride, ruin and majesty, Guardian explores the compelling, often disputed blank space of what lies between the material relics of our past and their Mortimer Street, London Poster by Emii Alrai Images by Rob Harris&nbsp; A Lake as Great as Its Bones takes its name from Lake Nemi, a volcanic crater south of Rome that the artist encountered during her residency at the Villa Medici in 2023. Drawing from the lake’s great history of shipbuilding, scuttling, excavation and destruction, the installation blends ceramics, metalwork, and sculpture to build a world that gathers fictions, fragments, and traces of an inconclusive past. For her first exhibition with the gallery, Alrai continues her investigation of material histories that reference archaeological sites and museum displays. She works with gold, pewter, silver, copper, and clay: materials with an embedded hierarchy that were used on the palace-like boats built on Lake Nemi in the 1st century AD. In a new series of drawings, Alrai uses bitumen to depict topographies reminiscent of the ancient landscapes around Lake Nemi. Bitumen is naturally found in the mud at the bottom of lakes, and in these drawings, the artist conjures gestures of unearthing what has been buried. In the same vein, sculptures are assembled across the gallery as artefacts from antiquity. Indefinite polystyrene forms are treated with gypsum and bitumen paint to summon scarred terrains or the clay bed of lakes, while ceramic vessels appear dredged up. A Lake as Great as Its Bones evokes material poetries that signal no definitive history, but a romanticised memory of the past. In mapping the gallery space, Alrai appropriates museological structures—vitrines and partition walls—to mirror how museums control both bodies in space and the subsequent consumption of the narratives on display. The works probe a subtle critique of Western museology in their subversion of value through scale and material palette. Terracotta pots remain unfired, scaled up to almost half of human size, and towering arches are built from polystyrene, a cost-effective substance the artist describes as ‘deathless.’ Gold scythes are rendered in miniature, and wall panels, inspired by stucco reliefs seen throughout Rome, are mounted on ply stained to look like teak or walnut. Throughout the installation, Alrai questions where value is placed and why, and tenuous relationships between truth and fiction are embraced. ‘We are so desperate to weave through these crumbled things, a sense of identity, nostalgia, yearning, and imagination,’ Alrai notes. As we traverse through a realm of her making, she positions herself as an unreliable narrator, forging remnants from an imagined landscape and troubling our reverence for unknowable histories. <img Her work uses techniques of forgery and mimicry, creating ceramics and sculpture which uses everyday materials to refer to artefacts and archaeological digs. Traditional willow weaving techniques have been reimagined in cardboard, whilst straw and plaster have been used to emulate traditional techniques of wattle and daub. The works bring together multiple narratives to create an installation which positions the viewer as intruder, hunter or voyeur. Using medieval hunting arenas as a starting point, a maze like structure is used to house sculptures punctured by arrows. Interlacing multiple themes, Alrai references: the etymologies and histories of courting; the coveting of gigantic artefacts held by the British Museum; ancient gravesite constructions; and the melancholic romanticisation of wounds by the Pre-Raphaelites. Through doing so she creates a maze, which dictates how the body is led through its journey and references how history has been constructed in a linear format. Each time one of Alrai’s installations is displayed and reconfigured, elements of previous exhibitions begin to deteriorate, adding to the faux archaeological environment, whilst new elements are added. In doing so she creates works that reverse a museological convention of preservation, shedding previous narratives at the same time as imbuing them with memory and autonomy. <img width="6000"
